This article is about the archives of Franco Basaglia and Franca Ongaro. We argue that the archive has to be considered the product of a cultural and political enterprise that involved both of them rethinking the approach to psychiatry. Here it is reported and explained the long and absorbing work the archivists undertook in reorganizing and describing the Basaglias’ records, as well as the many difficult decisions they took over the years. A first phase of the work concluded in 2014 with the publication of an online inventory (http://www.fondazionefrancobasaglia.it/inventario-on-line.html). A second phase is still underway. It aims at providing a detailed account of the many letters received as and few replies that have been kept as carbon copies in the archives. This activity has so far corroborated many of the decisions taken during the first phase. Also, it gave the authors more insights into the complexities of the Basaglia archives. The intent is to continue beyond their archive, to find their letters scattered in other peoples’ archives. The paper also describes this part of the project and the first steps taken in this direction.
