Palmerino, Carla Rita (Author)
Pierre Gassendi tried to provide the laws of motion with an ontological foundation, by explaining the behavior of compound bodies in terms of the dynamic properties of their component particles. In this attempt, Gassendi was however confronted with a double difficulty. The first was to reconcile the principle of inertia, valid at the level of the res concretae, with the atoms’ innate propensity to motion; the second was to explain away the fact that the natural motion of atoms is rectilinear and maximally fast, whereas compound bodies move along various trajectories and with different speeds.
