One of the most iconic drugs in the history of Italian pharmacy is Bioplastina Serono, injectable ampoules based on egg lecithin. This product was conceived at the beginning of the twentieth century by Cesare Serono from Turin (1871-1952), as a drug indicated for the treatment of all diseases deriving from malnutrition. Cesare Serono was a pioneer in the field of opotherapy. During his stay in Turin he conducted several studies on the therapeutic action of lipoids, in particular on lecithin. After founding a first company in Turin, in 1906 he created the Serono Pharmaceutical Institute in Rome, destined to become one of the most important Italian brands in the international pharmaceutical area. Since its foundation, the Institute has focused on its research in the field of opotherapy, the direct ancestor of hormone therapy, the clinical field developing in Italy between the 1920s and 1940s. Bioplastina was a product of extreme success, both for its effectiveness and for its quality: already in 1911, just five years after the founding of the Serono Laboratories in Rome, two million vials were sold per year. Not only were they marketed in Italy, but they soon arrived on the European and world market. Cesare Serono, from the beginning of his activity, set very high standards regarding the safety and stability of his product, adopting sterilization and pasteurization procedures. He organized industrial processing in order to guarantee prevention against microbial pathologies such as salmonellosis, a disease linked to poultry products, such as chicken eggs, from which the lecithin was extracted to make Bioplastina. The Bioplastina was the fortune of the Serono Pharmaceutical Institute, which in a short time became one of the most famous Italian opotherapic producers, allowing the expansion of the range of products including Kalicreinase, Peptopancreasi and Foscal, cutting-edge drugs for the time, in the treatment of hormonal deficit pathologies.
