This book suggests that scientific and technological practices entered the territory of the nineteenth century are essential to the experience of modernity and are a fundamental historical element to the understanding of contemporary Portugal. Sharing a precision culture imposed by the numbers, along with the military ethical values, engineers are the main characters of this narrativa.Três concrete episodes allow for a set of reading, sequential and chronological, scientific-technical construction of the country. The first reveals the anatomy of the Army School. The second follows the bureaucratic production of the Board of Public Works. The third follows engineers, agronomists and photographers who build the technological landscape of the Douro. Then new bridges, viaducts, tunnels and ledges, beyond the imagination of civilization, impressed by its aesthetic power, becoming an icon of the shared national culture.
