Bibliographical Evolutions: From Archaeoastronomy to Astronomy in Culture (2019)

unapi

This article reflects on the origins of the interdisciplinary field of archaeoastronomy and on the extension of its influence into the domain of cultural astronomy, i.e., the study of the relationships between human cultures and celestial events and objects. The emergence of modern archaeoastronomy is generally placed in the 1960s, when the divergent views of archaeologists and astronomers on Stonehenge were hotly debated. This divergence epitomized the lack of communication between the two communities and between two disciplinary cultures, and efforts to bridge the gap have marked the development of archaeoastronomy ever since. Academic publications, regular meetings and scientific societies became central means of dialogue between well-established disciplines—astronomy, archeology, and later, anthropology, ethnography, history of science, architecture, engineering, and mathematics. In this essay, particular attention is paid to the evolution of publications in the field, and how these contributions reflected and affected the cross-disciplinary dialog.
