Qu'il tende vers le progrès ou vers l'effondrement, nous voyons le temps sous la forme d'une flèche, et nous le supposons donc unique et linéaire, maîtrisé, dominé, comme vu de dehors, c'est-à-dire de nulle part. Or, la crise du climat nous oblige à abandonner cette position d'extraterritorialité : de multiples temporalités y entrent en jeu - les temps cosmologique, géologique, biologique, historique, social et vécu -, qui rendent caduc le primat du temps chronologique, lequel semble les aligner sur les barreaux d'une même échelle. Dans cet essai, Bernadette Bensaude-Vincent nous invite à sortir du cadre temporel de la modernité occidentale pour porter attention à la diversité des temps propres aux vivants et aux choses qui font monde avec nous - jusqu'aux virus, aux plastiques ou aux déchets nucléaires. En s'inspirant de la pensée chinoise classique aussi bien que de l'écologie du paysage, elle met au jour une hétérogénéité de trajectoires temporelles qui cohabitent, interfèrent et s'entremêlent. Par là, elle ne nous apprend rien de moins qu'à composer des « temps-paysages », c'est-à-dire à replonger les actions humaines dans les cycles multiples qui régissent l'histoire de la Terre, articulant le temps qui passe avec le temps qu'il fait.
