(For thousands of years, diabetes was one of those diseases that could be recognized by means of unmistakable signs - such as unquenchable thirst, increased urge to urinate and lassitude - but to which one was fatefully at the mercy. In the 19th century, histological studies and physiological experiments made it increasingly clear that the pancreas and the islet cells described by Langerhans played a fundamental role in pathogenesis. Based on these findings, the Canadian physician Banting specifically addressed the problem 100 years ago - with the isolation of insulin, which had previously only been postulated, and its first applications, he made diabetes a treatable disease - a breakthrough to which millions of people still owe their lives today.
