Passfield, Robert W. (Author)
In the Canadian Parks Service (CPS) a historical approach is used in studying industrial heritage sites to support the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada in carrying out its mandate to advise the Minister of Environment on the commemoration of sites of national historic significance. Sites are commemorated through plaquing or by preserving and presenting the extant historic resources on site, either through incorporation within the National Historic Parks & Sites system or by means of cost-sharing and cooperative agreements with nonprofit heritage organizations. Through studies drawing heavily on documentary research, sites of potential national importance are identified and evaluated to determine if they are of national historic significance and/or representative of themes of national importance in Canadian development, and suitable for development as national historic sites. This process has resulted in a wide variety of historical studies in diverse formats, as well as field surveys and recordings of numerous Canadian industrial heritage sites—studies and recordings that both comprehend and transcend the traditional IA approach to the survey, recording, and study of industrial monuments.
