[Abstract translated by Google Translate: This is the abstract in English… The idea we have today of Leonardo as an engineer is a consequence of his extraordinary manuscript legacy and of the singular history that saw his notebooks, largely dismembered and dispersed in various parts of Europe, as protagonists. With their rediscovery, which took place on the threshold of the twentieth century, the diffusion of the drawings of machines and equipment contained in them led to the birth of the myth of Leonardo, inventor and forerunner of our technological modernity, favoring, outside the narrow specialized fields, a distorted perception of his engineering work. Freeing himself from the sensationalist approaches sometimes reserved for his machines, the volume offers a biography of Leonardo retracing his career that from a "shop boy" led him to be a painter, engineer and philosopher at the court of Francis I of Valois, one of the most important European sovereigns of the time. A re-reading of his manuscripts that first returns Leonardo's efforts in acquiring artistic and engineering techniques, then those in the attempt to establish himself as an engineer and finally his singular research path which, through the practice and study of engineering, led to question the traditional conception of knowledge.]
