Il culto femminile nella chiesa di Santa Margherita di Mottola (TA) (2020)

unapi

The analysis of traces of excavation, and the resulting interpretation of the architectural forms of the rupestrian church of S. Margherita di Mottola, have made it possible to define four phases of the monument’s construction. In particular, the third phase envisgaed the creation of a space set aside for funerary use. The reinforcement of the worship of S. Magherita, practiced by women in the local area, and from the nearby town of Mottola, required a larger space where ceremonies could be held for protection, as requested by infertile women, women about to give birth, and, finally, rituals for new mothers to give thanks and seek purification. Thus, in the fourth and final phase of the church’s expansion, efforts were made in the right-hand part to transform the tomb area, creating two cisterns there, and, in the lefthand part, to decorate the walls with a cycle of frescoes depicting scenes from the life of S. Margherita. The two cisterns, created in the spaces where two burial niches were once located, gathered the rainwater from the level above, which was channelled by a small channel into cistern A, and which then flowed into the second cistern, cistern B, which was larger than the first, via another small internal channel. The sacred water collected by the two cisterns was used for the thaumaturgical ceremonies requested by infertile women, by pregnant women, and by women who were about to go into childbirth, and, finally, for purification of women after childbirth. This, by tradition, took place 40 days after childbirth itself.
