Thumiger, Chiara (Author)
This article proposes to take the problematic motif of "lack of consistency," "inconsequentiality," or "contradiction," a recurrent piece of criticism in ancient medical discussions, as a guide for an analysis of Caelius Aurelianus’ portrayal of Asclepiades in one of the most significant sections of his work, the first chapter of his treatise "On Acute Diseases" devoted to the disease phrenitis. This chapter stands out for its length within Caelius’ oeuvre; more fundamentally, it is important because of its topic, a disease ancient medicine long considered exemplary and nosologically central. With a focus on consistency in clinical practices, and specifically on a doxographic source, Caelius, this study will then consider the extant information for Asclepiades as a medical author, fragmentary medical source, and supposed practicing physician, rather than primarily as a philosopher or representative of a specific sect.
