Between Asclepius and Mammon: Disease, Death, Medicine and Public Health In Madras, 1786-1815 (2010)

Exploring the corporeal impacts of Empire, as well as the transformations of space and pathogens attendant on the East India Company’s colonisation of southern India, this thesis interrogates the discourses and practices of biomedicine at the interstices of imperialism, race and commerce inside a ‘garrison state’ using three case studies-‘fevers’, smallpox and plague.
