Cet ouvrage, qui s’adresse à un grand public, présente les plus importantes épidémies – choléra, typhus, variole, grippe espagnole, grippe aviaire, H1N1, sida… – qui ont marqué l’histoire du Québec depuis le xixe siècle. Selon une perspective sociohistorique, Denis Goulet y présente les différents modèles explicatifs des causes des maladies infectieuses qui ont parsemé cette histoire. Il fait une analyse originale de l’évolution des réactions, des attitudes et des comportements de la population face à des fléaux qui ont bouleversé leur vie quotidienne. À la croisée de l’histoire des mentalités et de la médecine, cet ouvrage, écrit pendant la pandémie de COVID-19, permet de saisir les similitudes et les différences des approches actuelles avec celles qui ont évolué depuis le xixe siècle. Il met en lumière les difficultés des pouvoirs publics à réagir efficacement face à ces maladies, parfois nouvelles, et dont l’ampleur dépasse les moyens de prévention.
