Da Spezieria a Farmacia Clinica: il viaggio della Farmacia Ospedaliera visto da Careggi (2024)

unapi

We describe both the structure of the Careggi Pharmacy of the Arcispedale di Santa Maria Nuova in Florence, erected in 1934 and later demolished in 1997. This account covers the organization and professional practices from 1970 to the beginning of 2010. We argue that over these forty years, the role of a hospital pharmacist has undergone a complete transformation. This transformation is attributed not only to the scientific progress in pharmaceutical technology, pharmacology, and medicine but also, more significantly, to a substantial shift in the professional focus of hospital pharmacists – transitioning from the drug to the patient. We narrate the inception of this new Clinical Pharmacy as observed by Careggi. However, Santa Maria Nuova stands out as the oldest among all still-functioning hospitals, with its apothecary dating back to its inception, at least from 1376, and likely even earlier. Numerous documents attest to this longstanding history of apothecary activity. Based on these documents, we argue that, in Tuscany, the apothecary at S.M. Nuova hospital was more akin, in terms of theoretical framework and professional interest, to the emerging pharmacy of the late 1900s than the pharmacy of the early 1970s.
