In December 1944, Werner Heisenberg, Germany’s most prominent physicist, a Nobel prize winner and the director of the Uranverein project for the military use of uranium nuclear fission, was invited to give a conference at the Zurich Polytechnic by his old friend and colleague Paul Scherrer. The US Secret Services, having been informed by Scherrer, despatched a secret agent to the conference. The agent, Morris Berg, was ordered to attend the meeting and to make contact with Heisenberg. Had there been any indication that the Germans were working on the bomb, Berg had orders to shoot Heisenberg, if necessary inside the lecture hall. Berg attended the conference with a pistol in his pocket. He had also been issued a cyanide tablet.
