The role of the barber is a non-negligible social role, in which ancient medicine recognizes the lowest level in the hierarchy of health professions, after that of the doctor and the apothecary: in addition to styling beard and hair, if in possession of the ‘license’ issued by the competent city authorities, he can also perform healing tasks of dexterity external to the body, according to the ‘galenic’ distinction. It is a professional figure everywhere very active and present, which is frequently used, representing an easy therapeutic support for many diseases, through specific health treatments, but especially with the practice of ‘salasso’, considered essential at that time to find a certain well-being, thanks to the ‘evacuation’ (or subtraction) of the ‘corrupt’ blood and of the ‘malign humours’. The article focuses, therefore, both on the personal characteristics that distinguish the profession and on some of the various technical methods used according to the specific needs of prophylaxis, highlighting in the end how the activity of the barbers, albeit subordinate to the primary function of the doctor, seems to have a considerable impact on the raw nosological reality of the pre-modern age.
