The Controversy over Atomism in Seventeenth-Century Naples: Francesco d’Andrea vs. Giovanni Battista de Benedictis (2022)

unapi

During the second half of the seventeenth century the Neapolitan lawyer Francesco d’Andrea (1625-1698) played a major role in the dissemination of corpuscular philosophy and atomistic science in the Kingdom of Naples. He was an active member of the Accademia degli Investiganti and defended atomism against the attacks by contemporary schoolmen in his "Apologia degli atomisti" (1685) and in his Risposte to Giovanni B. De Benedictis’ "Lettere apologetiche" (1694). After a brief reconstruction of the development of atomism from antiquity to the early modern period and of its reception in Naples, the controversy between d’Andrea and De Benedictis is discussed, while the final section reconstructs some of d’Andrea’s conflicts with ecclesiastical censorship.
