Die Landvermessung war in der technisch hoch entwickelten Welt des Römischen Reiches eine maßgebliche Disziplin. Bei der Anlage von Tempeln oder Legionskastellen, bei der Stadtplanung, dem Straßenbau oder auch der Landzuteilung spielte die Kunst der 'Feldmesser' eine grundlegende Rolle. Einer der bedeutsamsten Texte dieser Disziplin ist das sogenannte Feldmesserbuch (De limitibus constituendis) des Autors Hyginus Gromaticus aus dem 1. Jh. n. Chr. Diese Schrift ist unter anderem in zwei reich illustrierten Handschriften erhalten, deren Abbildungen in diesem Band präsentiert werden. Der Band bietet die erste deutsche Übersetzung des Feldmesserbuches überhaupt. Eine ausführliche Einführung erläutert die philologischen Hintergründe und die Bedeutung für Technik, Mathematik, Astronomie und für die Rechtsgeschichte. Der synoptisch gesetzte lateinische und deutsche Text enthält rund 130 einzigartige, teils spätantike Illustrationen, die die beschriebenen Sachverhalte veranschaulichen.
