In the seminar he held in 1940-41, C. G. Jung chose to analyze twelve of the 'personal' dreams described by Cardano in the last part of his Somniorum Synesiorum libri quatuor (1561). Ten of these dreams, according to Jung, constitute a complete series insofar as they manifest successive and multiple images of the unconscious. In his analysis, Jung goes against Cardano's own attempt to connect these dreams to their eventus (their fulfillment in reality) and isolates images through which an autonomous unconscious manifests itself. Cardano's conscience, like that of all Renaissance men, simply and plainly denied this.
