Curriculum by Design: Ibn Ezra’s Astrological Texts (2015)

unapi

Ibn Ezra's astrological works have been called encyclopaedic, standing out as an integrated corpus that covers all disciplines of the astrological doctrine, from the fundamental to the advanced. Over the centuries, typical astrological texts have functioned as compendia of contemporary knowledge and served in the transmission of this discipline from one generation to the next. At first glance, Ibn Ezra's work appears to have the same characteristics, yet a closer look reveals another agenda of teaching and instruction in the form of a comprehensive curriculum. Internal evidence for this is found in the language of the text, the structured topics, the cross-references from one book to another, and the sequence of the books. Yet intriguing external evidence comes from the timing and the locale of their composition. All these lead to a deduction that this corpus was composed 'on demand', as a complete curriculum for a specific audience seeking this kind of knowledge. The art and skill of teaching include not only imparting information but understanding student needs, where difficulties may lie, anticipating confusion and providing effective methods of learning. Ibn Ezra demonstrates all that throughout his writings. The cumulative effect of such instances, combined with textual evidence, proves the teaching agenda that underlies this corpus.
