Water management e organizzazione dell'insediamento. Dalle strutture produttive alla gestione delle risorse idriche del Lago Albano (2020)
This article aims to focus attention on a stimulating case study in the Colli Albani: the rupestrian site located on the shore of Lake Albano (Rome, Lazio). This site, which has a close relationship with the hermitage of S. Angelo in lacu, also exhibits a peculiar connection with sources of water, both as regards the relationship between the site and the geographical context, and as regards the internal organization of the site itself. What is more, research in recent years has made it possible to give a new interpretation to a somewhat controversial structure in the complex, which it is believed may be identifiable as a dovecote. This is a production facility of a certain value, also in relation to the presence of water infrastructure such as the Cento Bocche aqueduct, and the network of underground water channels that are to be found throughout the area. Furthernore, the presence of this production activity makes an important contribution to an understanding of the management of water, allowing interesting parallels with other rupestrian sites in the area, thereby yielding a picture of the settlement sites in this part of the Colli Albani that is of great interest for the medieval period, in which the management and use of water resources (lakes, outflowing streams, drains, underground channels, underground aqueducts…) was one of the crucial elements for these forms of settlement.
