Plagues that pose an existential threat to large population groups demand explanations of their pathogenesis and spread. Nowadays – e. g., in the case of Covid-19 – scientists have widely accepted tools and methods at their disposal for this purpose. In contrast, about two hundred years ago, a wide variety of poorly substantiated ideas existed to try explanations for the first major cholera pandemic in the German-speaking world. Based on 750 letters and three popular education brochures from that time, we analyzed which disease concepts dominated the public and private discourse and how miasmatic and contagionist positions were reflected. Overall, we observed that miasmatic concepts became increasingly prevalent during the course of this pandemic. We also identified all metaphors in the text corpus, assigned them to specific source areas, and investigated possible functions for interpreting and coping with the cholera pandemic.
