Darnell, Victor C. (Author)
Fabricators' catalogs and the reports and brochures of consulting engineers are a little-known source of data for the study of bridge history in the United States. This literature, ephemeral and, with few exceptions, given away instead of distributed through regular commercial channels, has received scant attention. Hitchcock's American Architectural Books . . . before 1895 has no pertinent items later than 1869, while Romaine's A Guide to American Trade Catalogs, 1744-1900 lists only nine. This paper traces the literature's development, describes examples, and contains a checklist of those issued in the 19th century, with a selected list for the period 1901 to 1940. The publications of trade associ- ations and iron and steel mills are discussed briefly as they, too, offer information for the study of the history of bridges.
