Coordinates determine the projection of geographical maps. Emerging from apparently objectively verifiable measurements they contour not only territories, but they also visualize political, administrative and military stocks of knowledge and interests. In the early modern measuring and mapping, geodetic instruments and cracks obtained increasingly important to detect spaces and claim dominion. Extensive surveying campaigns and scale maps contributed to the development, administration and defense increasingly extensively aligned states. In hardly any other principality still preserved stocks of geodetic instruments, cartographic products and related archival materials documenting the early modern state detection as comprehensive as in Saxony. Elector Augustus (r. 1553-1586), has current research suggests, surveys even personally performed and recorded by hand. The authors of this volume attempt from very different perspectives, such as mapping and geography history, archival and museum studies, art and country studies to understand how measurement instruments and maps from the mid-16th to the early 17th century as expression versatile interests and needs were employed. Electorate is the starting point for the question, as well as other German and European territories used the new technical opportunities to alleged about their territories, to acquire reputation in science and patronage to present their wealth to a select audience or claims to power submits to do. Considerations collection structure of the electoral Kunstkammer and the designation of the geodesic active electors form the basis for a view over the early modern Saxony also in adjacent territories such as Oregon and Maryland to Italy and the Netherlands. The band thus makes a significant contribution to the political culture of geodetic and cartographic products.
