Investigations of Flare Stars in Stellar Clusters and Associations at the Astronomical Institute of Muenster University (2018)

The project for flare star search and investigation in stellar clusters and associations in the southern hemisphere at the Astronomical Institute Muenster, suggested by W. Seitter and H. Duerbeck in 1984, is presented. The 40 cm ESO GPO astrograph was used for systematic plate monitoring of flare stars in the following regions: the Orion nebula region (M42/M43), the Omicron Velorum cluster (IC 2391), the Theta Carinae cluster (IC 2602), the Chamaeleon T 1 association (IC 2631), the Coalsack dark nebula (Caldwell 99), a dark nebula in Lupus (Barnard 228), the Scorpius-Ophiuchus region, a dark nebula in Ophiuchus (Barnard 59), and the R CrA dark nebula (NGC 6729). In the period 1985-1990 more than 500 monitoring and deep blue and red plates were obtained and digitized in the period 1989- 1995 by the Muenster microdensitometer PDS 2020GM with a step size of 20 μm, a position repeatability of 0.7 μm and a photometric accuracy of 0.08 to 0.12 magnitudes. The automatic data analysis was a necessity considering that the number of stars on one plate is of the order of 10 000 and the multi-exposure method multiplies by 6 this number. The automatic plate processing by the computer programme package FLARE developed on the basis of the reduction techniques used for the Muenster Redshift Project (MRSP) increased the number of registered flare events by 50% in comparison to the visual inspection. The other project results included spectral investigation of two flare stars with the Faint Object Spectrograph and Camera EFOSC 2 attached to the 3.5-m New Technology Telescope of ESO, work on cross- identification of flare stars, the start of compilation of flare stars catalogues and of the later established Flare Stars Database.
