The present volume is the third in a series published by Droz entitled Medicine, Life Sciences and Literature in France and Europe from the Revolution to the Present. It sets out to examine both the euphoric and dysphoric sides of the relationship of the collective imagination to science and progress as it has evolved within collective representations from the end of the Enlightenment to the present. To do so this volume focuses successively on knowledge models derived from the life sciences, on their diffraction into literary discourse and on diverse figures of the doctor seen in relation to figures of the writer. The last part, Exempla, tells of a few individuals whose lives constitute a particularly apt illustration of the close links between literature and medicine during this period.
