[Abstract translated by Google Translate: This is the abstract in English… This monograph examines the cholera epidemics that hit the cities of northwestern Istria and Trieste with their respective districts, mainly in a historical-social key with references to the demographic and history of medicine. The intent is to provide as complete and organic a picture as possible of the cholera phenomenon as experienced by the Istrian population, taking into consideration a variety of points of view related to the social, environmental, cultural and even ethnic context. The medical thought of the time, and with it also the debate that developed on the question of whether or not cholera was contagious, had a decisive influence on anti-cholera prevention measures and in part also on therapeutic ones. Even the very image of cholera returned from the socio-cultural context changed profoundly during the nineteenth century: from cholera as a consequence of mephitic exhalations, if not already a disease linked to personal morality, it passed in fact to the "cholera of the poor" and, in return, to "garbage cholera," to the point of conceiving it, starting from the discovery of Vibrio cholerae by Koch (1883), as a bacteriological phenomenon.]
