Magia naturalis: Zur Naturforschung in der Frühzeit der Leopoldina (Magia naturalis: On natural research in the early days of the Leopoldina) (2022)
The early modern natural research (Naturforschung) was essentially influenced by the idea of natural magic (magia naturalis). Nature was supposed to be a (female) magician whose mysteries had to be unveiled. The natural researches (Naturforscher) should learn to read in the “Bible of Nature” and identify her “signatures” by systematic observation of the natural things. This endeavour becomes obvious in the early publications of the Academia Naturae Curiosorum (Leopoldina) lastly in those of Lorenz Bausch, its co-founder. Based on selected illustrations especially from the first two volumes of the academy journal Miscellanea curiosa (1670, 1671) the contemporary perspective of natural magic and its impact on the research programme of the Academy is explained in detail. Die frühneuzeitliche Naturforschung wurde wesentlich von der Idee der natürlichen Magie (magia naturalis) inspiriert. Die Natur erschien als eine Magierin, deren Geheimnisse es aufzudecken galt. Die Naturforscher sollten in der „Bibel der Natur“ lesen lernen und ihre „Signaturen“ durch systematische Beobachtung der Naturdinge erkennen. Dieses Bemühen wird in den frühen Publikationen der Academia Naturae Curiosorum (Leopoldina), nicht zuletzt in denen von Lorenz Bausch, ihrem Mitbegründer, deutlich. Anhand von ausgewählten Illustrationen, insbesondere aus den ersten beiden Bänden der Akademie-Zeitschrift Miscellanea curiosa (1670, 1671), wird die damalige Perspektive der natürlichen Magie und ihr Stellenwert für das Forschungsprogramm der Akademie im Einzelnen erläutert.
