Philippe de La Hire : un astronome novateur dans la gnomonique et les astrolabes (2019)

Le travail majeur de Philippe La Hire sur les cadrans solaires est marqué par une rupture avec le traitement traditionnel qui leur était réservé pour leur construction. Sa méthode consiste à dessiner tout type de cadran solaire et à mettre en place le style polaire, uniquement par la géométrie, en ne connaissant que la date. Cette recherche d’universalité dans les méthodes de fabrication des instruments scientifiques se retrouve également dans les recherches de La Hire sur l’astrolabe ; bien qu’à la fin du XVIIIe siècle l’astrolabe soit tombé en désuétude, La Hire a développé un nouveau type de projection qui a rendu cet outil valable sous toutes les latitudes. Ces travaux de La Hire relèvent davantage de recherches mathématiques que de propositions pratiques.
