Among the Galileo papers is a page with six watercolor images of the Moon. Four are numbered 1, 5, 4, and 3, with an obvious but unlabeled candidate for the number 2. Explicit references to these numbers in the autograph manuscript for Sidereus Nuncius show how tightly these watercolors are connected to the construction of the book, and demonstrate how Galileo's plans evolved, leading to his combining drawings 1 and 2 into a dramatic pastiche for the published text.
