During the Restoration period in Italy there was an attempt by some influential parts of the Catholic Church to pursue a reconciliation with science, and in particular with Galileo. This attempt came into conflict with the one promoted by the new unified Italian state of identifying Galileo as one of the fathers of a "resurgent" Italy. Consequently, many - and, often, discording - publications appeared.
