Among the earliest works of art that responded to the call for an "American" art that defined and celebrated the national identity, industrial landscapes played a significant role in promoting a favorable image of industrialization during the critical years when industry was introduced into the American economy. The images made manifestly visible the claims of the pro-industrialists that industry could coexist harmoniously with agriculture and could make a positive contribution to the transformation of the wilderness into a fruitful "garden."
