Frank, Martin (Author)
It was traditionally thought that advanced mathematical studies in the environment of the Savoy court began with the arrival of Giovanni Battista Benedetti in Turin in 1567. The evidence presented herein however, demonstrates that even before Benedetti's appointment, the Duke of Savoy could avail himself of the services of the mathematician Ettore Ausonio. The sources studied reveal interesting parallels in the scholarly activities of Ausonio and Benedetti, with both, at the request of the Duke of Savoy, particularly focusing on the construction of scientific instruments and the publication of mathematical treatises. It appears therefore, that certain features of the scientific environment in Turin were already well-established before Benedetti's arrival, and that he can be considered Ausonio's successor as court mathematician to Duke Emanuele Filiberto.
