The remains of an 18th-century waterpowered charcoal finery forge were excavated at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, between 1929 and 1931. Despite the poor quality of the early excavation, the physical remains of the forge as recorded in plans and photographs, together with the recovered artifacts, supplied information on the forge's design, construction, and operation. Comparisons with contemporary illustrations and other excavated forges in England, Canada, and the United States allowed the preliminary construction of a typology of forge artifacts and features. In addition, analysis of the material culture of the Upper Forge showed variation from traditional (European) technology.
