This volume focuses on the philosophical and human story of Alessandro Malaspina (1754-1810), an Italian seaman, explorer and illuminist. Here, Enlightenment is deciphered through the Cassirerian filter that makes knowledge a stage in that odyssey by which the Spirit focuses itself by offering new unexpected horizons in response to human anxieties. Malaspina's courageous choices-his first paper on physics and philosophy (the first full translation of which is published here) and his second text (close to the ideas of Beccaria and Filangieri)-become an opportunity to reconsider a certain Enlightenment, and even more, to search, through this Enlightenment, for our possible meaningfulness in the face of the inexorability of time and reality
