Retort analysis : a method for characterising drugs – Retort Analysis consisted in direct heating of a substance and its decomposition in water, spirit, oil, salt and earth. Scientists thought, during the 17th century that the application of this method to drugs, allowed to establish their constitution. Due to the violence of this method, scientists at the end of the 18th century, preferred to use smoother techniques.
