Archeology or Heritage Management: The Conflict of Objectives in the Training of Industrial Archeologists (2000)

unapi

This paper will argue that while the statutory conservation and recording bodies in Great Britain, together with most county and contract archeologists, recognize the importance of industrial archeology, the academic community lags far behind and is, therefore, failing to provide adequate training for those working in the field. The paper suggests that one of the reasons for this failure is the continuing debate over the scope and definition of industrial archeology, and that its practitioners need to recognize the contradictions within their discipline and work towards a solution that will satisfy both those who teach and those who employ the archeologists of the future.
