This study represents a small part of a larger documentation effort undertaken by the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) for the Steel Industry Heritage Corporation. Since 1989, HAER has extensively documented several individual steel mills and related industrial facilities in the Monongahela Valley through the production of histories, measured drawings, and large-format photographs. In 1990 a special study was conducted to determine the national significance of the development of blast furnace practice in the region. The study found that between 1872 and 1913, the Carnegie Steel Company developed and implemented a set of principles for pig iron production—known as "hard driving"—that formed the core of modern blast furnace practice in America.
