The Preliminary Identification of Blue-Dye Plants in Ancient China (2015)

Since the Ming and Qing Dynasties,blue gradually becomes the dominant color of civilian clothing of the Han people and many other nationalities in China,with indigo the most commonly used dye. However,more than one kind of plant can be used in making indigo. The confused situation of popular names and those in old texts has brought some trouble to past and modern researchers regarding this issue. On the basis of previous research,this paper tries to make an initial identification of blue-dye plants recorded in ancient books.
