Hector Léveillé, missionnaire et botaniste (1863-1918) (2019)

Au cours de la seconde moitié du xixe siècle, de nombreux missionnaires se sont intéressés aux sciences naturelles. C’est le cas d’Hector Léveillé (1863-1918), des Missions étrangères de Paris, qui est l’une des figures de la botanique française de l’époque. Ordonné prêtre en 1887, il embarque aussitôt pour Pondichéry, où il est nommé professeur de sciences naturelles au collège colonial. Mais en 1891, il abandonne la mission, quitte les Indes et décide de se consacrer pleinement aux plantes et à l’Académie de géographie botanique qu’il vient de créer. Léveillé s’affirme alors comme un spécialiste de la flore d’Extrême-Orient et un infatigable apôtre de la botanique. Il meurt en 1918 et son remarquable herbier est acheté par le Royal Botanic Garden d’Édimbourg. L’exemple de Léveillé traduit la diversité des formes d’accès à la science au xixe siècle, souligne l’intérêt du clergé pour les sciences naturelles et montre l’importance des réseaux missionnaires dans la constitution des collections scientifiques et muséographiques au cours de la seconde moitié du xixe siècle.
