Sie wurden erst gebraucht, dann geduldet und schliesslich kaltgestellt. Vertrauen schenkte die SED ihnen nie; die Stasi bespitzelte sie und behinderte ihre Arbeit. Die Rede ist von burgerlichen Wissenschaftlern, die - parteilos oder als SED-Mitglieder - in der Ulbricht-Ara bedeutsame Leistungen trotz widriger Umstande erbrachten und unter Honecker mithilfe der Stasi rasch aus ihren Funktionen verdrangt wurden. Die Studie zeigt die beeindruckende Aufbauleistung in den Disziplinen, die die wissenschaftlich-technische Revolution der 2. Halfte des 20. Jahrhunderts pragten: die Mikroelektronik, die Raumforschung und die Kerntechnik. Sie wird erganzt um neue Erkenntnisse zum Scheitern des Flugzeugbauprogramms der DDR. (They were first needed, then tolerated, and finally put out of business. The SED never trusted them; the Stasi spied on them and hindered their work. We are talking about citizen scientists who - either without party affiliation or as SED members - made significant achievements in the Ulbricht era despite adverse circumstances and were quickly ousted from their positions under Honecker with the help of the Stasi. The study shows the impressive achievements in the disciplines that shaped the scientific and technological revolution of the second half of the 20th century: microelectronics, space research and nuclear technology. It is supplemented by new findings on the failure of the GDR's aircraft construction program.
