Il concetto di “tradizione” è stato oggetto di attenzione da parte di eminenti filosofi della scienza, tra cui Thomas Khun, e da qui si è sviluppata la ricerca storico–filosofico–epistemologica dell’autore: dal mondo cosiddetto greco del VI–V secolo a.C. sino alle moderne tematiche fisiche, matematiche e logiche, passando per il concetto di “Scuola italica” desunto da Diogene Laerzio. Nel volume la ricerca storica, in specie quella greco–antica, viene mantenuta sullo sfondo mentre si analizzano questioni prettamente teoriche, di epistemologia e di filosofia della scienza, di viva attualità. In esso vengono ripensati, in un serrato confronto con filosofi e storici della scienza, quelli che vengono ritenuti nelle diverse forme di scienza gli elementi costitutivi e i principi regolativi del loro mutamento e, quindi, la relazione di questi con l’ideologia, il conflitto sociale, ovvero con la tecnica, l’economia e la politica e con la vexata quaestio sulla cosiddetta oggettività della scienza.
