Solo "roba da matti"? Le sostanze di origine minerale della Farmacia del Manicomio di Siena (2019)

unapi

The Mental Hospital of Siena opened on December 6, 1818 in the cloister of San Niccolò, but it was only in 1870 that, at the behest of the then director Carlo Livi and according to project of the architect Francesco Azzurri, it was rebuilt according to the needs of modern psychiatry, following the model of the village asylum with scattered pavilions. Among the various buildings, a Pharmacy in an independent area was also set up. The Pharmacy was completed in 1886 and it’s still very well preserved. Inside the precious antique showcases, vases of the medicinal drugs can still be found. A document recently discovered in the antiquarian market provides detailed information on the use of specific substances, some of which are of mineral origin, used throughout those years for the preparation of medicines by the Pharmacy of the Mental Hospital of Siena.
