[Abstract translated by Google Translate: This is the abstract in English… A mysterious, repugnant, sex-related evil. It is able to spread terror by its gravity, the impotence of doctors to cure it, and the ability to impose a heavy mortgage on future generations. It is impossible to dominate and control with the traditional health policies adopted for the plague and, later, smallpox and cholera. It summons that of Aids the history of syphilis, or bad French as it was called the new, fearful disease in Italy, where the disease manifested itself epidemically after the descent of Charles VIII of France in 1495 and the siege of Naples at work of his cosmopolitan army. Long-lasting illness, insidious, degenerating, syphilis has produced an entire metaphor repertoire and guilty of the victims. In this book Eugenia Tognotti reconstructs the first impact of the "Venereal Venue" in Italy. Applying to the most up-to-date medical-scientific literature and to a variety of archival, literary and iconographic sources, it follows evolution over the centuries, passing through the 19th century syphilis and until the discovery of penicillin. Turning to curable disease, syphilis began to regress in the mid-1960s while preparing to enter the AIDS scene.]
