Seeing the Light: A Response to “Chasing the Light” (2019)

unapi

In defense of his claim that a primary concern of ancient optical theorists was the physics of light, the author of “Chasing the Light” offers Plato’s account of light, color, and sight in the Timaeus as a case in point. This brief essay scrutinizes that case in detail in order to show that, in fact, the main focus of Plato’s account was not on the physics of light but, rather, on the functioning of sight. Plato, in short, was “chasing” sight, not light.
