Panda, Sudhira (Author)
The eleventh century Indian astronomer and mathematician Śatānandācārya wrote the Bhāsvatī on CE 7 April 1099. Correspondingly this was the Pournima (Full Moon day) of the first lunar month Caitra of the gata-kali (elapsed kali era) year 4200. This text was a significant contribution to the world of astronomy and mathematics. Śatānanda had adopted the centesimal system for the calculation of the positions and motions of the heavenly bodies, which is similar to the present-day decimal system. His treatise received recognition in the text of the Karana (handbook) grantha. Commentaries of this work were made by different people at different times in history. Although the Bhāsvatī was reissued about once every century and was well known throughout India, and even abroad, at present it is completely lost and no references to it are available in current works. The main aim of this paper is to outline its contents and bring these to the notice of a wider audience, and to highlight the genius of Śatānanda and his contribution to the world of astronomy and mathematics.
