The Dickinson Memorial Lecture 2018: Measuring greatness: Engineering biography-scholarship, hagiography or a marketing tool? (2019)

unapi

This article presents a brief review of engineering biography, probably the most popular form of engineering history. Arguably this has resulted in engineering history dominated by a few well-known figures. Insufficient attention has been paid to networks, including family life, socio-economic context, and the achievements of less popular figures. Drawing on personal research into the lives of many pre-1920 civil engineers the author considers how engineering biography has developed, and what could be done to improve its value for non-specialist historians.
