This paper intends to disclose astronomical observations from Cochinchina and China either made by or reported by the Portuguese Jesuit priest João de Loureiro (1717-1791), who lived in Cochinchina for more than thirty years. Throughout his life Loureiro was forced by the circumstances to be a man of many trades. At some point he was the royal mathematician, the Cochinchinese king physician, as well as a botanist and a priest. Although Loureiro is best known for his botanical studies - in particular his book Flora Cochinchinensis -, during part of his life he systematically carried out astronomical observations and calculations. In his only astronomical paper, Loureiro presents lunar and solar eclipse data obtained between 1758 and 1774, as well as three eighteenth-century transit of Venus observations that until now escaped the attention of historians of astronomy. In this paper we overview João de Loureiro's life, and contextualize his activities within the local environment, Jesuit astronomical efforts, and eighteenth-century communication networks.
