Egnazio Danti e le carte del Theatrum Mundi della Guardaroba nuova in Palazzo Vecchio (Firenze). Le fonti geocartografiche (2019)

unapi

This paper considers the Theatrum mundi, or atlas, of 53 regional maps – arranged according to the order of Ptolemy for the four continents America, Europe, Africa and Asia –, painted in the doors of the wardrobes of the Sala della Guardaroba Nova of Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, by the cosmographer of Duke Cosimo I of the Medici Egnazio Danti in 1563-75 (30 figures with the big globe terrestrial iron that accompanies the cycle) and by the successor Stefano Bonsignori (23 figures). Compared to the existing literature, the paper explores the theme of the innumerable sources used above all by the inventor of the atlas: cartographic sources (expecially the well-known general and regional representations of Giacomo Gastaldi, Abramo Ortelio e Gerardo Mercatore, but also some geo-iconographic works by Bartolomeu Velho, Olaus Magnus, George Lily, Antony Jenkinson and others) and ancient, medieval and modern geographic-descriptive works (with special regard for writings of Marco Polo, Giovanni Battista Ramusio, Joao de Barros and many other travelers), in addition, of course, to the classical Ptolemaic Geography.
