L’image d’Aristote et la construction des modèles intellectuels au XIIIe siècle (2014)

unapi

An anonymous quodlibetic question, discussed around 1310 in Italy and devoted to the posthumous fate of Aristotle, denies him any hope of eternal rest, while proposing pro and contra arguments. Although apparently peremptory, the solution of the problem leads to other paths in the history of ideas and mentalities of the scholastic age. In the 13th century, the figure of the Philosopher, more than his doctrines, arouses the interest and stimulates the imagination of a literate public that goes beyond the academic classes. By expanding the dossier with texts of different natures and origins, I present the procedures used at the time to construct a model of the scholar and of science by metonymy. "Rule of all truth", "almost Christian" for some, "the worst of metaphysicians", proud miscreant for others, Aristotle is one of these ambiguous models, like any key figure of a growing culture, a model that lent itself to multiple interpretations, despite imposed doctrines, censorship or intellectual habits.
